Also remember that not all link juice or authoritywould be passed by 301ing 800 links to money site.. You will still lose some authority as like 100 links or so on.. for redirection as you lose the content for which the site got links for… The value of the links gets automatically devalved by google to avoid spam, otherwise everyone would be just 301ing all sites and spam the heck out of google..

So you mean, if I register an new domain, redirect it with 301 to my money page and build links to the new domain, it will have no effect on my rankings?

Damn I bought an new webhosting paket yesterday, only for this reason :/

I think Matt J. said it best…this is probably a Big Boy tactic and MOST SEO’s won’t see this. I mean how many companies out there can afford to go around buying up “well ranking” web sites just to gain links? That said, it’s a GREAT article with some good follow up conversation on a topic I was looking for more information on in case I ever do run across a scenario like this. Good job Greg!

Very interesting strategy but I wonder if it would be picked up as a link farm. These types of strategies end up discovered by the search engines and then countered with a new bot version. Then one day your website no longer shows up in results.

Recently I moved one of my web directories to a new Domain. I did a redirect to it and Google moved the PageRank over to it.

However, I know a few directory owners that purchased Domains just to redirect the PageRank to an existing site. There sites got de-indexed from Google.

Great post and we have had success using the process for us as well. @Jennifer R DropDay is one resource to find some of these old sites with high PR, DMOZ, and strong links that are relevant or related to the sites you are redirecting them to. If you can have the whois stay the same it has worked best for us but it does work if it is strategic, relevant, and another element of your SEO campaign.

I have also noticed that sometimes techniques that the search engines or others say not to do or “don’t add value or work” are the same ones using the strategies to rank. I recommend always testing for yourself and seeing how they do for you or your website. It’s the best way to find out.
