Sean:
If I may. You take PPC links directly to a focused landing page relating to that keyword or keywords so that the customer can decide if that's the type of product they thought it was. Initially they are looking to eliminate your product from their Google provided choice of options. So it's important to let them know that it is the product they were searching for. Once they decide they like your product then they decide if they like you and go to research your credibility or just purchase it. They must first decide you're product is focusing on their needs.

Thanks for the comments and questions.

@Sean - That is a great question, and is often one of the hardest concepts for people to understand. I could actually do an entire post on answering it, and I just might do that for you. En Bref, When you send people to a home page you require them to search through the site to find the product that fits them, and searching the site increase the chances of bouncing dramatically. In a nutshell you want people to do as little work as possible to find the product they are interested in. A landing page should match the targeted ad and eliminate this problem. Keep an eye out for a more detailed explanation.

@SEOElektro - The main purpose of this post was to discuss the difference between SEO and PPC landing pages. I focused this post on PPC landing pages and tried to draw the point that your SEO page can have many similar elements to a PPC page.

Great post David.

Question: Why do marketers recommend having your ppc ad go straight to the landing page as opposed to homepage? I would have figured that the consumer needs the rest of the website to understand and trust the brand before jumping the the purchase. Why are conversion rates higher for ads that just go straight to selling?

Thanks
