What about optimizing you site with all those keywords instead of spending money on ADS. Would it work?

You are absolutely right. We should use negative keywords specially with keywords in broad match. It also help in improving ROI. I have also added 800 negative keywords in one of my campaign & getting good results…..my client is happier with my work

I want to add one thing that has not been mentioned above, how about landing pages?
We can drive much traffic as possible after filtered by a negative keyword, but how well your landing pages can increase your sales?
Landing pages become the next important task to be done so that traffic that has been built can actually generate higher sales.

Thanks for the useful post. I just created my first targeted placement ad. One comment to add to what you've already said is that you can choose a site that's international but make it work for a local business by targeting geographically - I have chosen a 25km radius around our office as that's where we'd like our customer base to be.

The part I am confused about is how my ad will be selected by that site, and how keywords come into the picture. I'm targeting small business owners who are searching technology topics, but I'm not necessarily expecting them to use keywords specific to us. I'm not sure what keywords to put in, if any, and I'm also assuming I should put a fixed title in the ad rather than {keyword:My Keywords} which I'm using for regular search ads. I'd be grateful if you could shed some light on this.

Yes Indeed, adding negative keywords has really improved my ROI. In fact it helped me find the keywords that were converting much easier. Thanks

Great post. I have been messing around with adwords here lately. Trying to target my customers as directly as possible. Your post really helped. I just addes 204 negative keywords and am hoping to add more to narrow the spectrum down a little. Good post! Dave
