Good article. I agree with cleaning up your own mess. 301 redirects are a great way to keep things organized and having a WordPress blog makes things even easier with all the easy to use redirection plug-ins. Plagiarism is definitely a no-no especially since Google penalizes you for duplicate content. SEO is not rocket science but it is very tedious and staying organized is one key to success. Using google webmaster tools is great because it points out all the issues you have with your site and allows you to "clean up" in an orderly fashion.

Ben- I couldn't agree more. I know I benefit from the information I get from others and from talking about industry news with my peers.

Your "share everything" advice is pertinent, and not just when it comes to links - I enjoy sharing tips and anecdotal evidence with fellow SEO hounds, and I think we all benefit from doing so!

Thanks for the comments.

Maria- Yes, you are correct. You never want to have duplicate content existing on the web.

The basics are always a good place to start from with SEO optimization. I usually Start with on-page SEO factors and then moving on to off-page factors.
I don't use any black hat SEO tactics because I am looking for long term optimization results. So far, things are working very well using ethical SEO techniques to achieve rankings in the search engines. However, it isn't success, overnight, by no means.
