    Nice write up! I can’t write to save my life… but I can hire and teach regular copywriters to write for the search engines based upon the keyword research I do (plus a trillion other things as you well know). So that’s how I get by #1 in your list and have since 1996, otherwise I’d be doomed. I do what I do well and get others to help me in areas I don’t do well at. As a mathematician I have #3 sewn up! I could look at stats, trends, patterns in data all day long but would it pay the bills? Maybe :)

      You know, I would have never guessed I’d end up in SEO. I was thinking more market research since I love building surveys and doing data analysis. But SEO is the place to be for a marketer! It really is fascinating. I am brushing shoulders with some true experts here and it amazes me how quickly we evolve to stay ahead of this fast-changing industry! How about you? How did you get into SEO?

        I kinda fell into it. We started an ISP and with that came hosting clients that had Web sites… with that came the need to rank well (pre Google!). This was ~1997 and I haven’t looked back. Before that I was a programmer for the Air Force and I enjoy SEO much much more!

    Great post! Writing isn’t one of my better skills but i’m brushing up on it and this post helps reinforce the importance for SEO. I also focused on links and finding quality sites but Social is much faster and easier.

      Ferdinand, good question. It’s not that you can’t have keywords in your content. It’s just about using keywords wisely instead of creating a spammy article full of them. You want your content to read naturally and have your keywords used when they are relevant. That said, you do want to include your keywords in a few places to signal what your content is about to the search engines. Here’s an article that one of our copywriters wrote a few months ago about this delicate balance – “Write for People and for Robots” Hope that’s helpful!

    Great article Margo, the comment you made about key-wording is also dead on. Spammy keywording is an seo’s nightmare, one rule of thumb could be to use key-words at the top of your article and at the bottom. Thanks for this great information, we will definitely be using it on our side!

    Few more things beginner SEO Specialists should be good at:-
    1. Good at technical SEO aspects, must know the in’s & out’s.
    2. Habit of reading reputed SEO industry blog articles or be active at forums. (Some are like SEO.com, Moz.com, SearchEngineJournal etc. and other Google blogs)
    3. Believes in doing things in practical, whatever the knowledge they have had gained by learning from all these great resources, but in reality they must know what after effect particular SEO strategy will have before implementing or coming to any conclusion.
    4. Think more of as a normal user (instead of being more marketing & SEO oriented)
