AI SEO is becoming the new thing for people to invest in, so naturally it means you need to start thinking about budgeting for it.
But with this strategy being so new, you may wonder — how do I set an AI SEO budget? How much should I spend? What should I spend it on?
I’ve got all those answers below.
How much should I budget for AI SEO?
Since AI SEO is still very new, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how much you’ll need to budget for AI SEO. But, as a general rule of thumb, you can plan to spend about as much as you do for SEO services, which averages around $1,500 to $5,000 a month.
With AI SEO, there are a lot of variables that influence how much you need to budget for the strategy.
For example, one factor is how aggressive you want to be with AI SEO.
For some businesses, AI SEO is so new that they don’t want to spend too much money because they’re uncertain about the outcomes. Those businesses may not want to spend as much money just to be safe.
Other businesses, however, like to be aggressive with new strategies like AI SEO and may invest on the higher end, around $5,000, or even more, each month.
If you follow the 70-20-10 rule for budgeting, you can opt to spend the 10% on AI SEO.
How much should I spend on AI SEO before expecting results?
The reality is there’s no set benchmark for how much you need to spend in order to see results. A lot of it really depends upon your business, your industry, and other outside factors that influence how well you perform in AI search results.
But this question comes up a lot, especially with new strategies like AI SEO, because businesses worry that if they don’t spend enough, they won’t see the results they’re hoping for.
Here’s the reality: Consistency is the key.
Just like with traditional SEO, continually investing in AI SEO is what’s going to help you see the results that you want from the strategy. It allows you to keep building, month after month, and improve your strategy. That’s ultimately what helps you succeed.
There isn’t some magic amount that’s going to get you there, just like there isn’t really a magic amount that you invest in SEO that’s going to get you perfect results (it’s an estimate).
If you want to see results with AI SEO, consistently invest in it month after month. You can revisit your investment after a few months or a year to see if you need to do more to see better results.
What should I spend my AI SEO budget on?
So, you have a budget set aside for AI SEO — where do you start with it?
Here’s how you can spend your AI SEO budget, based on priority level:
1. Tracking software
Priority: High
I can’t emphasize this enough: you need AI SEO tracking software to track your AI search performance.
The reality is, tracking AI search performance looks much different than traditional SEO. You’re tracking a lot different metrics with AI search, including things like visibility, competitor visibility, citations, and more.
That kind of stuff is really hard to track in traditional SEO tools because they don’t really account for it. Traditional SEO tools focus on things like traffic, keywords, and rankings. (Although, there are some traditional SEO tools on the market that offer some AI SEO tracking)
It’s really hard for you to know if your investment in AI search is successful if you aren’t properly tracking it. If you try to rely on traditional SEO metrics like rankings, you’re going to fall short and think that AI search isn’t working for you.
That’s why it’s really important to prioritize finding AI search tracking software so that you have a clear and exact picture of how your AI SEO strategy is working for your business.
2. Technical SEO
Priority: High
Having a sound technical foundation is crucial for getting in LLMs. If bots can’t crawl your website, they can’t produce it in responses.
So, spend some of your budget for AI SEO on making sure you:
- Have schema markup on your pages
- Set up a clear page hierarchy
- Have fast-loading pages on your website
3. Content creation & optimization
Priority: Medium
Content is a crucial component to your AI SEO strategy, so you’ll want to make sure that it’s accounted for within your budget.
The only way to really rank in LLMs is to have content that they pull responses from. If you don’t have content on your website, you’re not getting pulled into AI search results.
If you do have content, it needs to be optimized and fresh to help you get into LLMs.
Part of your AI SEO budget should focus on optimizing content you already have (if you have it), while leaving room for new content creation if you don’t have much or need to fill gaps.
4. Build brand mentions (especially with third-party)
Priority: Medium
Brand trust is really important with AI search, so part of your AI SEO budget should be dedicated to building brand mentions. You may need to connect with industry-relevant third-party websites to help get brand mentions on those sites and build your validity.
These include high-trust domains, like news sites and .edu sites.
Guest-posting on reputable websites can be one helpful way to increase brand mentions. You can also try working with industry publications to get mentions of your brand.
Also, increasing mentions on community forums like Reddit and Quora can help with enhancing brand mentions.
Are there things I need to consider with my AI SEO budget?
- Is this an experiment or a long-term investment? Since AI SEO is so new, a lot of businesses are on the fence about how much they want to dive into it. You need to determine your level of confidence in investing in AI SEO, so you know how much to put towards it. Generally, if you see it as a “let’s try and see” strategy, you won’t want to spend as much as someone who sees it as a strong growth channel.
- Will you invest in software? This is something I highly recommend because a lot of traditional SEO tools don’t have the capabilities to track AI search performance effectively (unless it’s something like Ahrefs or Semrush). If you want to track your AI search performance, you need to consider how you’re going to do that.
- Do you need outside help? Since AI SEO is so new, a lot of businesses don’t quite feel comfortable handling their AI search strategy on their own. If you feel that way, you may need to consider hiring an outside company that actively works and experiments with AI search everyday. That comes at an extra cost, so it’s something you need to factor into your budget if it’s what you want to do.
FAQ on AI SEO budgeting
What’s the minimum monthly spend for AI SEO that actually works?
There isn’t really a set minimum monthly spend in order to see results, but just like SEO, how much you invest determines your success. That’s why it’s good to invest around the average ($1,500–$3,000 a month) to ensure that you’re actually driving results with your AI SEO budget.
What results should I expect at different AI SEO budget levels?
Similar to SEO, you’ll see better results when you invest more in AI SEO. Someone who spends $5,000 a month on AI SEO will see better results than someone who spends $1,500. That doesn’t mean that someone who spends $1,500 won’t see results. It’s moreso that, when you have a bigger budget for it, you can do more, and therefore, see more results.
Do I need to budget for AI SEO?
Yes. There’s no denying that AI SEO is becoming a prominent part of marketing. With Google integrating AI more and engines like ChatGPT and Claude increasing usage, AI SEO is something you need to invest in if you want to reach your audience wherever they’re searching.
