Greg, nice reminder about the intense amount of time involved in a link building strategy. The tools you’ve mentioned are invaluable. Glad you mentioned Ontolo. Garrett showed us the tool, and it appears to be uber valuable for prospecting niche markets.

Your mention of the importance of knowing which pages will attract links brings us back to the basics of having quality content. Many businesses realize they need credible links without realizing they need something worthy to link to first.

Keep up the great work and content!

    ” A competitor is a website that RANKS! ”

Exactly! I’ve tried explaining this to clients before now. They think that because they’re above Bob’s Hardware from two doors down, they can stop trying with the SEO. Well what about Frank’s Hardware and Steve’s Hardware in positions one and two?

Quite informative, reaffirms my thoughts on focusing perhaps not on my top keyword but on a derivative that is less competitive. What are your thoughts on focusing on long tail keywords (custom large polka-dot widget vs widget)? Is it worth getting put into such a defined niche to gain ranking?

    Thank You

Thanks Greg. This is very informative. I agree with Christiaan than most people don’t realize the importance of link building. Even Matt cutts recently released a video on the importance of natural links.. The video is available on http://blog.directorymaximizer.com/2010/07/23/matt-cutts-tips-on-link-building/ He gives tips on how you can build natural links with methods apart from the usual ‘great content’.

Greg – Very informative and accurate article. Thanks for sharing the tools. Link bait is somehting that a lot of people over look. If you get a hot link bait item, you can virtually sit back and watch the link building gorw organically!
