Pat: Hey, greetings, everyone! We appreciate you attending the SEO.com webinar today. We have a great presentation planned with SEO director Boyd Norwood from SEO.com. He has an awesome link-building webinar set up for you all—should be very interesting. We have a nice crowd in attendance today. We appreciate everyone in signing up and attending the webinar. How are you doing today, Boyd?

Boyd: Great.

Pat: Great. Do you want to introduce a little of what you’re going to be discussing today?

Boyd: Sure. If you’ve read anything about SEO online, you’ve definitely learned that you need to do link building to improve your rankings. We’re going to discuss the importance of link building and a few methods of link building and also how to build a natural link portfolio.

Pat: So, for this first image, what’s going on here?

Boyd: Anyone who has done SEO or who has a website and is working on getting better rankings in search engines has probably felt this way before. Things may not be going fast enough—you’re frustrated with your rankings. Or more specifically to link building, you’re frustrated with the links that you’re getting or not getting. You’re working; you’re requesting links but you’re not getting them. Occasionally you’ll be frustrated, but you just have to keep working hard to get those links.

First and foremost, I want everyone to understand that Google ranks web pages, not web sites. Each page of your site can rank for its own group of keywords. The more pages you create—the more pages of content you have on your website—is like casting a bigger fishing net out there to capture more search traffic. Keep that in mind: in addition to building links, you should be building great content for your site and adding more pages. Over time, you will capture more traffic because you’ll have more content on your site.

If you were a search engine, how would you determine relevancy? What would you look at? What do the search engines look at? They look at what you say about yourself (meaning what’s on your own website) and what others say about you—what other websites say about you. Obviously, what others say about you is link building. When they link to you, they are giving a vote to you, they are voting for you, they are saying ‘that’ about you—whatever’s in the link.

Pat: And where do they say this? Where are people talking about you?

Boyd: All types of sites can be blogged. It could be forums, it could be press releases—anywhere in their site where they are linking to you—that’s what they’re saying about you. Now there’s two sides to SEO. There is what you say about yourself—meaning what’s on your own website. And that is very important, but today, we’re talking about what others say about you, so link-building. Don’t forget to do the on-site optimization as well, but we’ll focus today on how to get those links.

  • Posting guest blogs on other sites that link back to yours can build your traffic also.

  • Hosting a giveaway of your product or service on other blogs can get your business a lot of attention plus create a good link.
  • You can also build links by commenting on other blogs. You will want to make a comment that contributes to their conversation.
